University Covid Tracking App

In September 2020, Maynooth University was facing its first academic year since the onset of COVID-19. Facility management practices were being put in place to handle remote teaching and on-campus classes that needed to account for social distancing.

I was approached in late September to assist with the development of a mobile app that would allow students and teachers to check in to locations around campus, or register their attendance remotely.

The app had already been fully designed and was working on Android, but the development team had run into issues with developing for iOS, and the nuances around handling of image data.

The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science reached out to me for help with native iOS code written in Swift and expressed the urgent need for the app to be both functional and published to the App Store before students returned.

I rewrote the iOS app from scratch over a weekend and had it awaiting App Review with Apple a day or two later after developer accounts for the university were set up.

Unfortunately, Apple guidelines around COVID-19 were extremely strict due to the potential spread of misinformation, so it took a lot of back and forth in App Review to get it through and approved.

MU Check-in is no longer active, but was in use from 2020 - 2022 and had over 10,000 downloads on iOS.
